Fields are the spaces where you enter information in a record or form. Each field holds a detail, such as an account name, a phone number, or an opportunity’s expected closing date.
Fields can contain different types of data, such as text, numbers, dates, or options from a list.
Standard fields
Standard fields form part of Sage Sales Management’s structure and are available by default.
For example, an account record includes fields such as name, account type, rating, and owner.
Their structure is defined by the system. From the administration platform, you can view their properties and change only the settings available for each field.
Locked properties display a padlock.
Changing a field’s display name does not change its function or turn it into a custom field.
Custom fields
Custom fields, also called extra fields, let you record information specific to your business that standard fields do not cover.
For example, you can add a field to record a customer’s preferred material or the number of premises a company has.
When creating a custom field, you define its data type and available settings according to the information you need to collect.
Main differences
Aspect | Standard field | Custom field |
Origin | Included in the application by default. | Added to meet a specific need. |
Structure | Defined by the system. | Defined during creation, within the available options. |
Configuration | Only the settings available for that field can be changed. | Depends on the data type and available options. |
How fields relate to value lists
A field can let you enter data or select options from a list.
For example, Account type is a field. The options you can select to complete it belong to its value list.
The field defines the information you collect; the list defines the available options.
